Last night’s BBC documentary Putin, Russia and The West contained perhaps the most powerful and disturbing footage broadcast on terrestrial television yet.
A boy from a village in Chechnya is dragged out of his home by Russian soldiers, he is heard screaming for his life – ‘hy-aa Allah’ – and the narrator tells us that his body was found much later buried in a Russian base.
The pictures which were shot before the Moscow Theatre siege, and of course much earlier than Beslan, are perhaps also the first hard proof of what Russia’s soldiers were doing as they attempted to reconquer Chechnya for their president, Vladimir Putin.
Russia’s military doctrine when it comes to conquering and reconquering its restive Muslim provinces has been simple – the harder you hit them, the less likely they are to come back again.
Russia’s soldiers were of course the original ethnic cleansers, a process that began under Ivan the Terrible is still ongoing to this day in the Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingush Settia.
Little wonder then that the West has found it hard to accommodate Russia as a part of Europe or Nato.

A British MP has called for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, as the Gaza conflict enters its seventh week.
Fiona Mactaggart, MP for Slough, also said Israel’s assault on the civilian population of Gaza was a war crime.
She said a large number of her constituents believed the BBC’s coverage of the conflict was biased, siding with Israel.
She believes the reason for this was that the Palestinians were struggling to survive in an open prison and could not get their story out and that journalists were unable to get in to Gaza to report on the unfolding horror.
The British government she believes has to end arms sales to Israel.

When Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood won Egypt’s first ever general election, even the UK hailed it as a great event in the history of that country. But before Morsi even got a chance to become President his days were numbered – John Prescott, the former deputy PM who served under Tony Blair’s war cabinet was warning that the West was on a crusade to destroy political Islam in the Middle East and North Africa. He spoke on Russia Today arguing that the decision had been made at the time of the Iraq war. He was widely ignored.
Today, his words are ringing true as we witness the 28th day of the slaughter in Gaza – a war Israel says it is fighting in self defence against Hamas. Tel Aviv is joined in this enterprise by Egypt’s newly installed military dictatorship which itself massacred thousands of people as it overthrew the democratically elected government of the Muslim Brotherhood and set about destroying it as a political organisation. Cairo has closed the Rafah crossing which has caused untold suffering as injured civilians are denied any medical help in Egypt. Cairo, like many Arab states, is hoping Israel will achieve its aim of destroying Hamas, for the last thing they want is a change in the status quo – one which would mean an end to their corrupt lavish lifestyles. Political Islam is a threat to them because there would be no more sheikhs and kings, it would be a world where the oil wealth would be evenly spread out not concentrated in the hands of a few. To the West, political Islam is a threat because they would have to deal with independent rulers rather than puppets. Anyone who still believes that Gaza and Egypt are wars on terrorism only has to look at the horrific pictures that have emerged to know that that is not true.
